Time Is Running Out to Remove Bats

Aug 15, 2025

As seasons change across Illinois, now is the time to take action if bats have found a way into your attic or walls. At Fur Busters Wildlife Removal, we want homeowners to know there's a limited window for safe and legal bat removal—and it's closing fast.

Illinois’ Bat Removal Window Is March 15 - May 15, and August 5 - October 30.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, permanent bat eviction is only allowed from March 15 to May 15 (as long as outdoor temperatures are above 50°F at dusk), and again from August 5 through October 30. Outside of these periods, removal is not permitted, due to the presence of flightless bat pups during the summer months.

That means if you don’t get bats removed before May 15, you may have to live with them until August—and by then, the problem may have gotten much worse.

Why Timing Matters

During late spring and summer, many bats in Illinois give birth and raise their young. Baby bats can’t fly for several weeks, which means evicting adults during that time could leave pups behind to die—something that’s both inhumane and illegal. That's why the state restricts removal during those months.

How to Know if You Have Bats

Keep an eye (and ear) out for these signs:

  • Chirping or fluttering sounds coming from the attic, especially around dusk or dawn
  • Bat droppings (guano) near vents, windows, or the foundation
  • A strong, musky ammonia odor in upper parts of the house
  • Bats flying near your roofline at sunset

Even tiny gaps in your siding or around vents can let bats in—they only need a hole about the size of a dime.

What to Do Now

  • Schedule a professional inspection ASAP
  • Get bats out legally before May 15
  • Seal up entry points to prevent re-entry
  • Avoid costly damage and contamination from guano buildup
